I am constantly amazed at how some people can exude a feeling of doom without even opening their mouths. We've all seen this, right? The cashier chomping her gum and rolling her eyes as you approach the counter, the associates at the clothing store sighing when you interrupt their conversation. The list goes on and on.
I am prompted to write about this topic because it's, well... what I do. Some people are not aware of their actions and what they are 'not' saying. I was at a fabulous expo yesterday and arrived about halfway through the day. As I was walking up and down the aisles, I saw a man literally holding up his chin with his hand. I felt so sad for him. He seemed so miserable. I don't even remember who he was representing. What do you think his non-verbal message was saying to passers by? Have you ever felt like this man? Maybe you've had days like the store associates. What message do you send when you are stressed or bored? No doubt, it is hard to remain enthusiastic all the time, but each person is a new opportunity for business or a referral. Have you ever just been going through the motions and see someone smiling? How did it make you feel?
I was driving in the rain today. It was kind of gloomy and another car cut me off. I was turning the corner and I saw a lady in her car with a beaming smile. It just made me smile. It was contagious and it came none too soon. I felt some grumpiness coming on prior to that moment. Her smile just parted the clouds. I don't even know her, but she influenced my day in a positive way.
Whatever we don't say can effect others just as much as what we do say. Did you know that over 70% communication is non-verbal? What messages are you sending? What are you NOT saying? Are you the crabby vendor, or the smiling person on a rainy day? Believe it or not, we all have several choices throughout the day to go in either of those directions. Which one do you choose?
