Are You Challenging Yourself?

Are You Challenging Yourself?  This seems like a rather vague proposal, doesn't it?  Yet, it is seemingly human nature to stay in a 'comfort zone' of thinking.  Don't believe me?  Look at small children.  Have you ever noticed that no matter their size, most often, they like to play with toys that are beneath their age level?  Why do you think that is?  I have a pretty good idea...  It gives them a sense of accomplishment to conquer something.  Have you ever listened to a student practicing an instrument?  They get to the same sticky spot.  Instead of plowing through it, what happens?  They go back to the beginning because that is what they know.  Sound familiar?  Can you think of an instance in your own life where you keep starting over and hitting the same trouble spot?  What do you do?  Do you keep starting over, or do you plow through the issue in little pieces?  Since I play the piano, I will liken this concept to learning a new musical piece.  Sometimes, it is best to play each hand separately to get used to it.  Then, slowly move through the piece playing with both hands.  Next, add dynamics. What objective in your life do you need to work on slowly and steadily?  You might not hear the piece in the way it was intended right away, but with diligent practice and perseverance, you will hear the masterpiece within.  Keep at it!
